Better Business: Rhino Wines Raises Conservation Money by the Glass
Rhino Wines is passionate about rhino conservation – and has found a way to help.
Charise Matthews submitted an email about Rhino Wines for our Better Business Stories intitiative.
With a passion for rhino conservation and wine, we wanted to contribute in some way to help stop the illegal trade in rhino horn and rhino poaching. The idea was to create a campaign to raise awareness surrounding the poaching crisis facing these iconic animals, which is being driven by the high demand for rhino horn in Vietnam and China.
We were introduced to David Newton, the Regional Director of TRAFFIC, the Wildlife Trade Monitoring Network, a joint programme of WWF and IUCN , and so our journey began to raise funds to support their rhino conservation efforts! Between January and April 2015, already 393 rhinos were lost to poaching. The wine range, produced and bottled by Excelsior Estate, includes a Shiraz Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc (Double Gold Michelangelo Award).
Rhino Wines SA has already donated R2300.00 @ R2.00 per bottle purchased.
The exciting breakthrough was getting the Rhino Wine range listed and distributed throughout the Kruger National Park.
Getting potential clients to support a small business, especially when you are up against long-established wine distributors with huge marketing budgets was always going to be a huge challenge. Distribution is the biggest hurdle. We want to expand the brand nationally, but to achieve this objective, we need the support of a retail chain to drive the campaign further.
What a great campaign, and for a great cause, too. For more information on Traffic, see http://www.traffic.org/rhinos.
